Social Sciences Department has reference books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and gazetteers; genealogy and local history resources.

Microtext Department has historical newspaper collections including the Jewish Advocate, Boston city directories and telephone books; Boston residents lists (voter registrations); Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for New England and Massachusetts County Probate records.

Norman B. Levinthal Map Center has 200,000 maps and 5,000 atlases dating from the 15th century to the present including maps and atlases from the New England region and world urban centers.
