The JGSGB Book Group had its first meeting in January of 2020. Originally meeting in member’s homes, the group has gone virtual.
Joining the group is an ideal way for our members to get to know each other in a relaxed, informal setting while reading and discussing books of interest. The Book Group chooses books, fiction or non-fiction, with genealogical content or ones that are set in times and places that our ancestors once lived, both in the US and abroad. The group meets every 6-8 weeks.
Many JGSGB members have expressed an interest in seeing what the Book Group has been reading. Here is a list of the books we have read to date.
The Song of the Jade Lily by Kirsty Manning
World of Our Fathers by Irving Howe
The Sterling Affair by Nathan Dylan Goodwin
The Promised Land by Mary Antin
Paper Love by Sarah Wildman
When We Were Arabs by Mahmoud Hayoun
The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman
Our next meeting is May 11, 2021 at 7:30 PM via Zoom. If you would would like to join the Book Group, just let me know by sending your name and email address to Bookgroup@jgsgb.org.
The Lost by Daniel Mendelsohn is our current book. I read this book many years ago, around the time that its author was our speaker at the Heidi Urich Annual Lecture with Hebrew College. It is the inspiring true story of the author’s search to learn what happened to his grandfather’s brother during the Shoah.
I want to let you know that there are several talks by Daniel Mendelsohn available on C-Span’s Book TV. He speaks as well as he writes and I think you will enjoy listening to him.
