As often as not\, the experience is summed up with little more than the word “pogrom” which has come to serve as a sturdy coda for all that transpired in what was\, at the turn of the 20th century\, the largest concentration of Jews in the world. How consistent these assumptions are with history\, how they surfaced and with such persistence and what else transpired in this culturally diverse\, complex community will be the subject of this talk. \nBio: \nSteven J. Using DNA and Documents to Search for a Holocaust Survivor's Identity; and Holocaust Survival and Reunion Stories DESCRIPTION:Who is Pnina Gutman? Using DNA and Documents to Search for a Holocaust Survivor’s Identity\nPnina Gutman is a 77-year-old great-grandmother living in Israel. In 1942\, as an infant\, she was smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto. She has lived her life without knowing her birth identity. Colleen Fitzpatrick tells the story of Pnina’s search for who she was at birth through documentation and DNA analysis. Several cousins and other relatives have been discovered\, but Pnina’s birth name remains unknown. The search is ongoing. \nHolocaust Survival and Reunion Stories\nDuring the Holocaust\, Jewish and non-Jewish organizations helped transport some Jewish children to safety and hide others with Christian families.  About 10\,000 children were rescued in all.  After the war\, the efforts to save children continued\, reuniting many of them with their families and the families who had saved their lives.  This talk describes the rescue and reunification attempts\, featuring the personal stories of several child survivors who rediscovered their roots decades later\, keeping in mind that many did not know their original name nor details about their birth family. \nColleen Fitzpatrick\, PhD\, the founder of Identifinders International\, is an internationally recognized forensic genealogist. Her work in genetic genealogy has helped solve multiple cold case homicides\, expose Holocaust literary frauds\, and identify the unknown child on the Titanic. She lectures widely in the US and abroad and has authored three books. \n\nSpecial Interest Group (SIG) Meetings\nPre-lecture: 12:30 pm – 1:20 pm\nUkraine SIG \nPost-lecture (approx. 3:30 pm)\nBelarus and Poland SIGs \n\nAdmission is free for members\, $5 for non-members. She explains how newspaper searches are done and how to manipulate your query to find results. She presents a very useful and often underappreciated tool that researchers can use. \nTV researcher and genealogy teacher Janeen Bjork has been obsessed with the information historical newspapers contain ever since she found a story about the 1894 murder of her great-great grandfather\, William Strutz\, in a Syracuse\, NY\, newspaper. She’ll share her search methodology via several case studies that illustrate how anyone (you!) can find and preserve family items from online newspapers. \nFollowed by Spotlight Talk: John Simon – Finnish Jews: Strangers in a Stranger Land \nThe first Jews came to Finland as soldiers with the Russian army\, when Finland (formerly part of Sweden) became a grand duchy of the Russian Empire in 1809. Although the rights of Jews were restricted for over a hundred years\, during WWII\, Finnish Jews as citizens openly served in the Finnish army\, even fighting  under German command.  In his book\,  Strangers in a Stranger Land: How One Country’s Jews Fought an Unwinnable War Alongside Nazi Troops..and Survived\, John Simon follows three generations of Finland’s small Jewish community exploring the historical\, psychological and moral implications of the extraordinary circumstances into which these Jews were thrust.  \nJohn Simon grew up in Pleasantville\, New York and studied at Hamilton College\, Cambridge University\, the Sorbonne and the University of York. In 1973\, he founded a program serving at-risk youth in Manhattan described in his book To Become Somebody. In 1984\, he moved to Finland where he worked for KONE Corporation as a communications officer. \n\nSpecial Interest Group (SIG) Meetings\nPre-lecture: 12:30 pm – 1:20 pm\nBessarabia SIG \nPost-lecture (approx. 3:30 pm)\nGalicia and Sephardic SIGs \n\nAdmission is free for members\, $5 for non-members.
