Marlene Englander – The Lost Shtetl Museum: Jewish Lives Remembered in Šeduva, Lithuania

Program Description:
Eighty-four years after the Jews of Šeduva (Lithuania) were murdered in the Holocaust, the Lost Shtetl Museum opened there. The museum’s exhibits and memorial grounds will be highlighted to show what Šeduva, its vibrant Jewish community, and shtetl life throughout Eastern Europe were like before World War II. Marlene will explain how her family’s photographs, documents, and other artifacts have been incorporated into the museum’s exhibits, helping preserve the history of Šeduva’s and Eastern Europe’s Jewish community for future generations.
Speaker Bio:
Marlene Englander is a retired medical librarian and amateur genealogist in Cleveland, Ohio who has served as secretary and treasurer of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Cleveland. She co-authored My Dear Hindalla, Remember Me: Letters from a Lost World, May 1937–January 1940 with her mother. Marlene has given presentations, including at the IAJGS conference in Warsaw, on her family’s connection to Šeduva, the book, and the letters and artifacts on display at the museum. She attended the grand opening of The Lost Shtetl Museum in 2025.
