Meredith Hoffman – “Solomon Cohen” through the Censuses, 1790-1940: The Census as Evidence and History

March 20, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

– Zoom Meeting

Today’s Program has been canceled.

In the next week or so it will be recorded and available on the members portal page of our website.

Researchers often underutilize information found in the census. This case study follows the presence of Jewish names in the U.S. census from the first decennial census in 1790 to the last available one in 1940. The talk explores each census in order to make the most use of the information that is found in it. This process offers an intriguing look at the changing history of the presence of Jews in the U.S.

Meredith Hoffman is a professional genealogist and popular lecturer who specializes in researching Jewish immigrant ancestors. She particularly enjoys solving difficult Jewish name problems. Meredith is a member of the JGSGB board where she works on special publications and outreach, Syllabus Chair for the New England Regional Genealogical Conference, and JewishGen Town Leader and KehilaLinks coordinator for Berezno, Ukraine. She is a graduate of the Boston University Genealogical Research Program and Stamford University’s Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research, and holds degrees in Linguistics from UC-Berkeley.
