Program Description:

Ellie Vance Christensen will discuss the history of Jews in the Russian Empire and the Pale of Settlement where it’s estimated that, at its peak, over 5 million Jews once lived. In this talk, we’ll learn about the common Russian Empire record types such as metrical books (birth, death, marriage, divorce), revision lists, the 1897 Census, military records and much more. Additionally, we’ll discover where to find these records online and how to navigate archives and archival finding aids.

Bio:

Ellie Christensen earned degrees in Russian and Family History/Genealogy at Brigham Young University, and was the Russian/Slavic specialist at the FamilySearch Library. She currently serves as a technical historical records expert for FamilySearch. Ellie enjoys teaching others how to trace their roots in the former Russian Empire.
