Nancy Korn – From Breslau to Britain: German Jewish Refugee in Kitchener Camp and British Army Pioneer Corps
Program Description:
Using photographs and personal letters, Nancy Korn will illustrate the story of her great-uncle Hans Korn, born in Breslau, who, despite having fought for Germany in WWI, was imprisoned in Buchenwald in the 1930s. His fascinating story places him in the midst of some of the most historic events of WWII as a Holocaust prisoner, a refugee, a soldier in the British Army Pioneer Corps, and an occupier of his former birth country. He was at the evacuation from Dunkirk and the London Blitz. A real-life Forest Gump of his time!
Bio:
Nancy Korn, the daughter of a German Jewish refugee, has been researching her family for over 25 years. Her focus is on the former German/Prussian provinces of Posen and Silesia as well as the Holocaust and WWII. Nancy presented some of her research at the 45th IAJGS Conference in Fort Wayne, IN, and in Breslau and Loslau (today in Poland), her family’s ancestral towns. She has served on the board of JGSGB in various capacities and is currently the Membership Chair.
Fay Bussgang – Documents That Tell a Story
Program Description:
Two years ago, Fay Bussgang discovered some interesting papers saved by her late husband, Julian. These document his life between 1939 and 1949, detailing his wanderings and pursuits through six countries—as a refugee from Lwów, Poland, a pupil in Romania and Palestine, a soldier in the Free Polish Army in Italy, and a student in England. Through these historical documents, Fay will recount Julian’s youthful story, revealing his experiences of critical world events of that decade.
